John H. McLain
Veteran of the Year Award
The Sarasota County Veterans Commission accepts nominations for the John H. McLain Veteran of the Year Award from July 1 through October 15 annually. “Sarasota County is fortunate to have veterans that continue to perform altruistic acts after their military service to our nation,” says Ted Smith, President of the Sarasota County Veterans Commission. Recipients of the prestigious award are selected based upon their service to other veterans, active military and their families, patriotic endeavors, educating the community about veterans’ historic impact on democracy throughout the world, and other community service engagement. This is the highest honor that the Commission bestows annually upon a veteran. Andy Hooker is the Veteran of the Year 2015 - 2016. "Mr. Hooker is the embodiment of everything the award represents. We look forward to recognizing other veterans who are engaged and contributing community service in Sarasota," said Todd Hughes, the commission's Vice President. The Commission also recognizes citizens who are not veterans for supporting military families.
To nominate exemplary candidates for the awards, complete a nomination form for each candidate and mail it to the Commission during the nominating period. Annually, nominations must be received by the October 15th deadline. Nominees must live, volunteer, and/or work in Sarasota. Click here "Nomination Form".
The Commission will announce the names of the 2016 - 2017 honorees and present the three awards on Veterans Day, November 11, 2016.
Woman Veteran of the Year Award
The Commission encourages nominations for the Woman Veteran of the Year Award. Ted Smith, Vice President of the Commission and chairman of this year's Veteran of the Year Selection Committee, states, "Women veterans from all walks of life have found avenues to make positive impacts, first upon our country, and now upon our local community. The Commission believes the contributions of women in military service have been underestimated in years past, and a veteran who is currently demonstrating extraordinary community service in Sarasota will have well earned the recognition that comes with her selection as Woman Veteran of the Year.
Recognition for non-Veterans
Auxiliary Member of the Year
Organizations and individual citizens may nominate people for the Auxiliary Member of the Year Award. This award is a tribute to non-veterans for their service to veterans, active military, and their families.
